About Us

NKT Commercial was founded in 2005 by Nick Tompkins, while he was also leading his produce company, Apio. What began as a part-time venture has since grown into a full-time, family-owned business.

With a dedicated team and a portfolio spanning across three Central Coast counties, we bring both experience and local insight to every project. We specialize in navigating complex entitlement processes, identifying underutilized but well-located sites, and executing developments that are thoughtful, practical, and grounded in the realities of the communities they serve. We’re also deeply invested in the long-term success of our tenants and lessees, working to create spaces that help businesses thrive.

Our work ranges from infill commercial projects, to build-to-suit office and industrial, to large-scale, mixed-use developments.

A Glimpse into Our Projects

  • Enos Ranch, Santa Maria

    This development was completed in 2018. It serves as the largest commercial shopping center in Santa Maria, along with an Auto Mall, multi-family residential, and school. It is home to major retailers, including Costco, Lowes, Dicks, Chick-fil-A, Home Goods, and others.

  • East Branch Street, Arroyo Grande

    We completed this development in 2012. It is home to two local favorite restaurants in the Village of Arroyo Grande and is located on a hard corner.

  • Tank Farm Office Park, San Luis Obispo

    This ground-up development includes two buildings, which we completed in 2007 and 2009. These offer commercial office space in San Luis Obispo.

  • 12th & Pine, Paso Robles

    We acquired the shops at 12th & Pine in 2011. The property was fully remodeled and repositioned in 2016. It is located in the heart of the Downtown City Park.

  • SLO Tech Office Building, San Luis Obispo

    This was constructed as a ground-up development in 2015 as a build-to-suit for an international tech company, complete with an approximate 400 car parking structure.

  • 1101 Monterey, San Luis Obispo

    Originally the site of a gas station and mini-mart, we acquired this site in 2013. We completed the building shell and the final TI buildouts in 2024. This 3-story building is home to a fortune 10 technology company and a popular regional restaurant. It is located on a hard corner in downtown San Luis Obispo.

  • South Broadway, Santa Maria

    Located on the signalized, hard corner of S. Broadway and Enos in Santa Maria, this complex offers large retail space in a very desirable location.

  • Spring St, Paso Robles

    This shopping complex is home to a grocer and an autoparts retailer and has ample parking. We acquired this site in 2012 and repositioned and improved the site by the end of 2015.

  • University Square, San Luis Obispo

    This shopping center serves as a major hub to both Cal Poly students and nearby neighborhood residents. It is the closest shopping center to Cal Poly University, which has nearly 25,000 students.

  • Dana Reserve, Nipomo

    In 2024, we completed the entitlement process for this master-planned community featuring 1200+ homes, a 14-acre retail shopping center, a Junior College satellite campus, hiking, biking, and equestrian trails, and 7 parks. Our goal with this project was to provide a true ladder of housing for our local community.

  • Park Cinemas & shops, Paso Robles

    A modern 9-screen, fully updated multiplex theatre with recliners, Bose surround sound, and four separate retail shops, this property is located across the street from the Downtown City Park in Paso Robles.

While we specialize in ground-up development—guiding projects through the entitlement and planning process—we also invest in existing properties where we see opportunities to enhance and improve. Ultimately, we focus on acquiring assets with long-term potential—properties we’d be proud to hold forever.

We’re not outsiders. We live and work on the Central Coast, and our roots here shape every decision we make. Over 95% of our portfolio is exclusively family-owned. That gives us the ability to move quickly, think long-term, and stay focused on prudent, risk-weighted, sustainable growth.
